Review: Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

This blog has been open for almost a month now and I have yet to post a book review.  I've had this one sitting and waiting but haven't put it up yet.  So, here is my very first review on the blog.

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

When I saw a book with the title Tiger Lily and read the first line of the synopsis I pre-ordered the novel immediately.  Ever since I first watched the Disney version of Peter Pan I have loved the character of Tiger Lily, so I was excited to see a story that was all about her.

The story follows the friendship and romance of Tiger Lily and Peter Pan before Wendy came into Peter's life.  I was pleasantly surprised by the story in the novel.  It wasn't at all what I expected it to be, though I can't really explain what I was expecting, as the Disney movie doesn't give too many details about Tiger Lily's life.  But I loved the very real story of a girl who lives in a community that expects her follow a certain path, when she has the urge to follow a different path.

I originally thought that Tiger Lily would be the narrator, seeing as the novel is about her, but the narrator was actually Tinker Bell.  I absolutely loved that Tinker Bell was telling the story because the story was as much about her as it was about Tiger Lily, and it made for a very satisfying story.

Review: Deadly by Julie Chibbaro

Hello, Pickwickers! I'm very excited about the new blog, and I decided for my first review here, I'd discuss one of my favorite books I have read this year. It has been awhile since I found a novel that kept me so interested that I read it late into the night, and also satisfied by desire for a well-written YA romance as well.

DeadlyDeadly by Julie Chibbaro

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I absolutely loved this book. The story, about a young woman in 1906 who leaves finishing school to become an assistant in the very young Department of Health of New York, was very compelling. Prudence finds herself yearning to know how bacteria and illness works, partly for personal reasons, and partly as a calling to become a scientist or doctor herself-- if that's even possible for a woman in 1906. She and her chief find themselves investigating a case of typhoid that is spreading, and they must catch the person spreading it (if you're familiar with this part of history, you probably know who they're after...).

My only grumble was that I was so invested in the story that I could easily see it wasn't going to be wrapped up to my satisfaction. I could see at one point that there were less than 15 pages left, and I still felt as if I were in the middle of the story. So, I deducted one star for a hurried ending.

I definitely plan to research the facts behind the fiction in this case, and also find more books by this author.

Welcome

Welcome to The Pickwick Club!

For months Tara and I have separately considered the idea of opening up a book review blog, but neither one of us was ready to start.  We didn't want to review every book that we read, just the ones that we really enjoyed and wanted to share with people.  When we started talking about opening a joint blog we knew it was the right fit and The Pickwick Club was born.

We are planning to post anywhere from one to three book reviews (each) a month to share with our readers some of the books that we have read and loved.  From time to time we also plan to post about writers and series' that we like, or other book related topics.

To find out more about us, check out "The Club" link above.  And be sure to check back soon to see what books we're talking about.

Happy reading, everyone!
